Slynk – Shambhala Fractal Forest LIVE 2011 by Slynk

Not that I’m searching the local clubs or out that much, but one local dj that i can’t stop raving is DJ Slynk, especially his 2011 funk mix (download here) and already posted on this site.

Above is his latest release an I’m sure you’ll all quickly approve. (Press the little down arrow on the right of the player to download an keep.)

I don’t know him or met him, but I managed to catch a few moments of his time an complete an interview … its as follow.

“Digital Audio Workstations in general effected the game in a big way. You can go out and spend $800 and you have everything you need to make music on your computer. Everyone has a computer in 2011.”

1) For those that dont know, bring us all up do date on Dj Slynk?
Well I just got back from Canada. I was playing this festival over there called Shambhala. Its the best festival in the world full stop. Did a few side shows in the surrounding cities including one supporting Deekline in Edmonton which was really sweet! I’ve been gigging my butt off. So far this year I’ve played shows in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Hobart, Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Auckland, Hamilton Island and Jindabyne. A lot of these shows are Regrooved parties which is a worldwide club night which is promoting funky music of all kinds. I’m a big fan and supporter of these parties.

Production projects in the works,
I’m doing a remix for Basement Freaks which will be going on a remix album to follow up the release of his new album
I’ve got a few songs coming out very soon on D*Funk & Philly Blunt’s label, Grits & Gravy. Should be out next month.
I’m very close to finishing an EP for Ghetto Funk Records, its going to be huge!
I’m doing a collaboration with Pimpsoul for his EP titled Pimpsoul & Friends.
I’m doing a collaboration with The Funk Hunters which are doing a similar EP.

“Laruche in the Valley is great too. Its such a beautiful venue. You have to see it to know what I mean. Its a classy venue and everyone likes to be seen there looking their best but they really know how to party and they’re not shy about it!”

five hundred rolling-stone redit by simondodson

I have the list down to about 240 tracks that i want to use and slowly but surely importing them one by one and prepping, warping and setting, at my current rate, its looking like months, i intend to make them all work somehow though, for a podcast, although that may never eventuate, as the task may get the better of me.

Remember i said that back in February or something, about how i set out to edit the top 500 songs voted by rollingstone down into an hour or so, well i was right, i started this project early december an thought id chip away here n there an finally get it done, wishful thinking, after i got about 200 songs sorted, everything got really really tedious and not fun, the bpm spread and arrangment was really doing me in with such a wide sound palette. i would work on it , then leave it an do other things an then come back to it, only to sorta go somewhere, nowhere else on it … just a nightmare in the end… and much too ambitious … and ive decided to pull the plug an never go back into that file.

It is the biggest non event ive worked on, ive spent a crazy amount of time not completing it… you can see some of the ground work here and here.

And whats even worse, it just sounds so really bad… I wasn’t going to post it because of it, but meh. Kinda a bummer…

Above is a sample of what i did happen to get moving, its fairly rough an still in draft arrangement, but you will get an idea on what i was trying to do …

Peace… actually just listen to this ..

Some kinda, man·age·a·ble order…

***update- listen here, start at the 3min mark, somethen like this ….

I’ve been back using ableton and sorting music more then usual, which isnt a really bad thing, messing around, making tapes and workng on some stuff with friends. Seems to be a whole great deal of new things to play with though, including new ipad midi controller called touchable , thats what you can see to the right and the thing first up in the video below, it basically syncs with abletons session view and all your controls can be handled from the device, filters, effects, loops control, tempo etc etc etc, fairly solid really for $30au, you can also install the iphone app for around 2-3$au, which is a pretty great deal.

Just add instant headache, i also started to collate and sort and get into somekind manageable order of The Rolling-Stones Top 500 Songs of all Time list, released a couple years ago, i have the list down to about 240 tracks that i want to use and slowly but surely importing them one by one and prepping, warping and setting, at my current rate, its looking like months, i intend to make them all work somehow though, for a podcast, although that may never eventuate, as the task may get the better of me.

I’ve recorded my screen with a few tracks from the playlist i had been organising, not all that organised an nothing near clean or complete, but if you’re interested how it works and what The Animals, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Dr Dre, Snoop Dog, Maryvn Gaye & Tina Turner remixed together very poorly sounds like then, well …

>> Press play

Ive also typed the artist when a new sample is started to show whats what, oh an be sure to enlarge vid to fit screen to see it all… unless you squint great…

Ps. oh and apologies for the lack of links past two weeks or so, really havnt had that great a time to collate them. I will get there … have faith….

Pps. How funny funny is that crack fox tale clip below….
